The mission of After the Bell is to partner with schools to stand in the gap to meet the needs of kids in our community and we've been doing just that since 2008.
We asked ourselves and the community, "What are the primary needs of children?" Many students need homework help after school and learning activities that reinforce core skills. They need a nutritious snack they can enjoy and fun opportunities for exercise. Many kids need a place to meet new friends and feel a sense of community. Some simply need adults in their lives who genuinely care about them. We quickly discovered that there was a need of that same care over school holiday breaks. These needs provide the framework for a program that is intentionally designed with each student's needs, as well as the staff's interests and experience, in mind.
Children attending After the Bell are supervised by a staff that includes certified teachers and volunteers from within our community. Many volunteers are Arizona State University interns who represent many different fields of study. Each semester, new college students breathe fresh air into our program and allow us the opportunity to experiment with new activities. They are also able to better assist our students with homework! Each After the Bell staff member has successfully completed a background check and screening. Other volunteers come to us from the neighborhood itself and those who attend Christ's Community Church.
